Racing Tidbits
By Devon Ellington
Here are a few updates, in case you fell in love with some of the horses during the Breeders’ Cup. Several of the horses have been retired. If you are a particular fan of a horse, know the farm he or she retires to, and want to visit, please contact the farm in question to set up an appointment before your trip. First and foremost, these are working farms. Most stud farms, etc., are happy to give tours, but they do run on a schedule. You can’t just show up at the barn door and expect them to drop everything.
That being said, here are some of the retirements announced since the Breeders’ Cup:
Speightstown to WinStar;
Storm Flag Flying to Claiborne (rumour has it she will be bred to A.P. Indy, which could create quite a foal)!
Pleasantly Perfect to Lane’s End;
Domestic Dispute to Northview;
Nebraska Tornado to Juddmont;
Birdstone has been retired, but at the time of this deadline, it hadn’t been announced where he would end up. Somewhere in Kentucky is all I know.
Contrary to my incorrect belief, Azeri has not retired, and will race again in mid-November. A strong possibility for her next race is the Falls City on Thanksgiving Day. I’m concerned that she will be pushed until she breaks down, and I hope it’s not fatal.
I’d like to thank my colleagues at www.thoroughbredchampions.com for helping me fact check and pointing me in the right direction for the correct information on these horses. Their dedication and extensive knowledge of their favorite horses is a joy!
