Florida aims to put bite in title game
Finally. Some respect for the SEC. Thank you, voters and BCS computer, for giving Florida a shot at the national title against Ohio State . Now, go, Gators! (That will probably be the only time you'll ever see me use that phrase!)
Who's next?
On to more important stuff, like who will be Alabama 's next football coach. We love rumors of big-name coaches down here in the Heart of Dixie. So far, Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban, Jim Leavitt, Frank Beamer and Rich Rodriguez have all denied any interest in and/or any contact with the Crimson Tide. Others on the "list" include Paul Johnson (Navy), Jim Grobe ( Wake Forest ), Greg Schiano (Rutgers), Bob Stoops ( Oklahoma ) and the former coach at my old high school. (Just kidding about that last one.)
I think Mike Shula should've been given another year. Few people can turn a program around while dealing with probation, cuts in scholarships and pressure from Alabama trustees, boosters and fans. I'm also not a big fan of Mal Moore. Didn't Moore hire Dennis Franchione? And Mike Price? And Shula? We know how all those turned out.
Whoever Bama hires, I hope he is allowed to stick around long enough to make an impact, a good one.
If you can't take the hit, get out of the pocket
I'm so tired of refs treating NFL quarterbacks like they are porcelain dolls. I understand throwing the flag for late hits and hits to the head. But just for hitting a QB and making a good play like Green Bay 's Cullen Jenkins did against Seattle 's Matt Hasselbeck in last week's Monday night game? Please, if officials are going to make calls like that, quarterbacks might as well be wearing red "no contact" jerseys. Seriously, if quarterbacks aren't tough enough to get up from a good, legal hit, they have no business on the field.
Ravens in the Super Bowl? I'm torn
I'm not a Ravens fan. I really couldn't care less how Baltimore does. If it wasn't for my husband bringing it up, I wouldn't know the Ravens even had a shot at the playoffs, much less the Super Bowl.
Our daughter was conceived during the 2001 Super Bowl, which the Ravens won. Now if they should make it again, will the conversations we've been having about going for baby No. 2 turn into action? It's something to think about. Maybe.
Final 5K of 2006
I ran my last 5K of the year Nov. 11. I was alone the whole way, but I liked it. Just me and my brain. You should've heard that conversation.
Brain: It's OK if you walk now.
Me: Really? It's only been 2 minutes.
Brain: You could alternate running 2 minutes, walking 1 minute.
Me: No. I'm going at least a mile before I walk.
Brain: But it's cold and drizzly.
Me: I know. Can you believe I'm out here doing this? Cool, isn't it?
Brain: Crazy is more like it.
Me: Shut up.
I finished in 40:24, and I was not last. After the race, I rewarded myself by spending some money at Target.
Hot mama update
Nothing to report. I'm still hitting the treadmill, but that doesn't do much good when I'm still hitting the cheese fries, too. New Year's resolution, anyone?
