Sunday night quarterback Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers, outplayed Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. Rivers and the entire San Diego Chargers' football team held their breaths the remaining minutes of the fourth quarter, and so did everyone else. The fans, the announcers, everyone watching barely breathed as this sensational game came down to the final few seconds watching history be made. No one could have guessed how this game would have ended. No one would have anticipated that a veteran kicker of Vinatieri's caliber could have missed not one, but two field goals that cost his team a victory. This man hardly ever misses a field goal, and tonight, he missed two that would have given his team the win.
Yes the rain came, the field, slippery, but two missed field goals and six interceptions thrown by Peyton Manning were what ultimately cost the Indianapolis Colts a second straight loss. A team with such high hopes, has now seen their eminence shaken, fallen, diminished. No team will be scared to play them anymore. No team will see the Colts as a huge threat. A tall feat, but not an impossible task. Manning seemed flustered, dying inside, thirsting for this win. But even the great Peyton Manning could not have foreseen this outcome.
I guess it only takes one missed field goal to shake a player's confidence. One missed kick that could either win or lose a game. All that pressure. It usually comes down to one man, one play, one second that could change the outcome of an entire game. And tonight, Adam Vinatieri had the weight of the world oppressing his shoulders.
Everyone favored the Colts to win this game. No one ever counted on the Chargers to beat them. The Colts are last years Super Bowl Champions, and the Chargers are nowhere near as good a team as they were last year, but that does not matter when you have luck on your side. The Chargers seem inconsistent at best. This year Philip Rivers is either great or horrible. When the Chargers played the Broncos, they demolished them. Tonight, Rivers could not even throw a touchdown. But you do not have to be the best in the league, or play that well, if you have luck on your side. And luck, is exactly what the San Diego Chargers had all night long.
From the opening play of the very first quarter, the Chargers started the game off with a bang, running the ball all the way back for a touchdown. This was the first touchdown of the game, giving the Chargers a 7-0 lead. Then Manning threw an interception and another and another, it seemed every time he touched the ball he threw an interception, having the worst game of his career. His mistakes gave the Chargers a 23-0 lead in the first half, as Peyton seemed shaken from last week's loss to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. He seemed to be forcing the ball, pushing the plays, and wound up throwing an incredible six interceptions during the game. A number that will forever haunt him. A number that will blemish his impeccable record. A number that would have benched any other quarterback in the league if his name were not Peyton Manning.
Manning's unfortunate interceptions allowed the Chargers to come away with touchdown after touchdown. Philip Rivers tried to move the ball down the field and keep his team ahead of the Colts. He threw several times to Tomlinson, keeping the energy alive during a heavy rain. But rain could not keep the Chargers fans quiet, as the stadium roared with thunder, cheering on their team. The lightening bolts stirred up a storm, as Peyton Manning tried unsuccessfully to get his team back on top.
This game was incredible. I have never seen a better closing to an edge on your seat victory. The Colts came close in points, several times it seemed that they would either make a two-point conversion and tie the game, or kick a three-point field goal and win by one point, but luck was just not on their side. 23-21 was the final score, as the San Diego Chargers took away a win that even Tomlinson thought was impossible.
Who would have guessed that a reviewed play in the last few minutes of the fourth quarter, stopping the Colts from getting a first down, stopping the clock, forcing a field goal, would have been the turning point in the game. After Vinatieri had missed an earlier kick that was rushed, having to run onto the field and kick the ball all in less than seven seconds, this time he was so close to the goalpost, he could take his time. But something was wrong. His face looked scared. Chewing gum, trying to keep calm, he could have made this kick with his eyes closed. He should have made this field goal, but instead, he missed. Missing an opportunity, the second of the night that cost his team the win. I have never seen Vinatieri so nervous.
I could not believe it, nor could anyone else. Peyton could not believe that Vinatieri missed two field goals, as he tried in the final few seconds of the game to move the ball down the field. And within the last second of the game, he threw his six interception of the night, solidifying the Colts loss. Stunned. Shocked. Amazed. Every time you thought the Colts were going to come back they somehow came up short. And luck, what can you say about it. The Chargers had all the luck in the world. Luck is what won them the game. Luck is what places them at the top of their division in the AFC West. And luck, is what will probably move them forward towards a playoff game.
