Saturday I watched three spectacular college football games. Each with heightened anticipation, each with a special mark to make; all three games had fans sitting on the edge of their seats. If you left early or turned off your television, you missed the best part. The day started early with Notre Dame playing Navy. Notre Dame has not lost to Navy in 43 years. Playing in South Bend, you would think that even though the Irish have had a bad run this season, they still would be able to defend that title.
Evan Sharpley started as quarterback for the Irish, seemingly better than freshman Jimmy Clausen, he is the better choice to be Notre Dame's starting quarterback this year. Finally they have a passing game putting some points on the board. Maybe Coach Weiss should have done this a long time ago, say, after the first game. I know he is grooming Clausen to take over for the amazing Quinn, but Clausen is no Brady Quinn. Sure he was great in high school, but this is college, and Clausen so far, has less than impressed with his quarterback skills.
This game gave fans not one, but three overtimes, as Notre Dame and Navy were tied after the fourth quarter going into overtime, a second overtime, and a third. It was in the nail biting third overtime where the Irish lost. Navy made a touchdown and the two-point conversion. Notre Dame made a touchdown, tried for the two-point conversion, did not make it, but there was a penalty, so they had a second chance. Saved by the yellow flag thrown by the officials, Notre Dame tried again for a two-point conversion to throw the game into a fourth overtime, but fell short, and Navy, miraculously, and most deservingly, won.
This was the first win for Navy in 44 years over Notre Dame. The Midshipmen snapped a losing streak of 43 years against the Fighting Irish with a 46 to 44 victory in triple overtime. This game marked a historical win for Navy. It was the first time they have beat Notre Dame since 1963. This was the year, this was the team that finally broke the unlucky losing streak, and gave Navy the most sought after victory of their season.
Since that game went into triple overtime, I had to turn both my televisions on, and watched side-by-side action, as Texas played Oklahoma State. An away game for Texas, they were losing horribly by the third quarter as it was 14 to 35, and it seemed that Texas was doomed for another loss. But never count out the Texas Longhorns, as quarterback Colt McCoy stepped up to the pressure and moved his team back into fighting position. Although he threw a few interceptions, he threw several touchdowns, and by the fourth quarter, the teams were tied 35 to 35.
Colt McCoy was sensational the last quarter of the game, throwing pass after pass, running several times to get a first down, he was a quarterback on fire, looking more like a future Heisman Trophy Contender than a sophomore quarterback. McCoy took charge of his football team, and moved the Longhorns down the field, scoring touchdown after touchdown. A leader emerged today, and his powerful presence was noticed by everyone. His actions roared like a lion, staying confident and cool. He never lost control of the objective, and in the end, Texas beat Oklahoma State in the final few minutes of the game.
Oklahoma State missed a field goal, giving Texas the ball. McCoy quickly moved his team down the field in the final minute of the game, running for another first down, setting up the kicker with a 40-yard field goal instead of a 50. That needed 10 yards made all the difference, as the kicker kicked the ball and made the winning field goal, giving Texas the victory over Oklahoma State 38 to 35. Another riveting end to a fantastic game, Colt McCoy was definitely the MVP of this game. Coming into his own, he shined above the darkened clouds that hovered in the first half, giving him the strength to persevere and help his team gain a valuable win.
The third exciting game on Saturday took place in the evening, as number 2 ranked Boston College took on Florida State. With Matt Ryan as quarterback for Boston College, the Heisman Trophy Contender this year looked sluggish, having an off day. With so many teams this year falling after they have made their way to the top of the BCS standings, Boston College followed in the footsteps of USC, and lost to Florida St. 17 to 27. As Matt Ryan faltered, throwing interceptions, which seemed to be the turning points in the game, another quarterback emerged. Florida State's quarterback Drew Weatherford had a wonderful night.
Another edge of your seat game, Boston College did not seem distracted by the evident need of points on the board, and continued to play without urgency. But like teams before them, they just lacked the superiority that keeps a handful of teams unbeaten. Only Ohio State, Kansas and Hawaii remain unbeaten. Ohio State is successfully securing their top ranked number 1 position in the BCS standings. Trying to solidify their eminence among the other fallen teams of USC, LSU, and now Boston College, only Ohio State reigns untouchable in college football, destined for a Top Bowl Championship this year.
This season college football has had ups and downs almost every week. Just when you think one team is destined for greatness, they lose to an unranked team. Just when a team starts to show their power, they get outplayed and defeated. When will a team break free from all that clutter, truly defeat their opponents without having a struggle? When will a team showcase their talent and prove they are the only ones to be placed in the number 1 ranked position, and are there to stay!
