Joe Torre appeared on Sports Center Monday evening and something was very wrong. It wasn't his appearance in center field of Dodger stadium that seemed out of place. It wasn't the Dodger uniform shirt he was putting on, although I've never understood the reasoning behind baseball coaches wearing uniforms. After all, we all knew he was heading to L.A. No, the strange thing was his head. He was wearing the blue baseball cap of the Los Angeles Dodgers. After seeing him wearing a Yankees cap for all these years, Dodger Blue on his head was similar to watching your neighbor go from standard run-of-the-mill hair to a Mohawk. It was just freakish. Eventually I am sure we'll get used to the new doo, as will Torre. Unlike the neighbor, Torre won't be able to just bail out and go back to his old style. The new one will have to last for three years. Day after day, he'll look in the mirror at Dodger Blue. For a while, it will seem strange, but like all new digs, if Joe brings home a world series ring to the city of Los Angeles, we will all, including Joe, get used to the hat. No one will care the color of his hat anymore. That is probably a good thing, because if he does win a World Series for the Dodgers, his head may swell, and that will require a larger wrong colored hat.
