Sunday night football was at its best, ever. The San Diego Chargers took on the Tennessee Titans, and fans at Qualcomm Stadium cheered on their team, boosting them to a victorious victory into the Playoffs! Confident and cocky, the dishy Philip Rivers sauntered onto the field feeling invincible. Tall, tan, and taut, Rivers executed precision and poise, especially in the second half of the game. First half, well, it was a shaky start, but luckily the Titans had only two field goals heading into halftime with a 6-0 lead. That is nothing in football, as Rivers and the rest of the team came out strong, determined with conviction to get into the playoffs, and they did just that. Indianapolis Colts, watch out, the San Diego Chargers are roaring into town.
The San Diego Chargers' fans would like to erase the first half, and so would the entire team, but it is the second half that counts, anyone can tell you that. It all comes down to the fourth quarter, where legends are made, and the best team standing on the football field after sixty minutes of pure adrenaline rush takes the glorious walk into victory lane. Chambers, Jackson, and Tomlinson stepped up to the challenge, and with high expectations, they proved how valuable they each are on this awesome football team.
After kicker Nate Kaeding missed an easy field goal in the first half, it was up to the offense to put some points on the board. A throw from Rivers to Jackson put the first touchdown on the board, giving the Chargers their first lead in the game during the third quarter, 10-6. Vince Young who looked strong and healthy, was ready to take charge of his Titan team, and made a good effort as quarterback to get his Titans in contention, but the defense on the Chargers team proved invaluable as well, and held Young to zero touchdowns.
As the fourth quarter rolled on, and the game was tight in points, both teams seething for a win, thirsty for a playoff spot, no team wants to go home a loser, so that is where one team must step up and another must sadly fall. It was the San Diego Chargers that emerged from the rainy spotlight and with Rivers bullet throws and rocket arm, moved the ball down the field, lining up a fourth and goal situation. Now, do you kick the ball for three and make it a seven point lead, knowing that if Vince Young and the Titans get the ball back and get a touchdown they would tie the score, or do you go for the risky, but brilliant decision, and go for it for seven? After the Chargers used their last challenge, sucking up their last time out, the head coach proved he was not one to be intimidated, and went for the touchdown.
Who to give the ball to? Who on the team can you count on, trust, know that they would get that touchdown without faltering? Who else, but the best player on the team besides the quarterback, LaDainian Tomlinson. Rivers handed the ball off to him and he jumped in the air, over the stack of footballers, higher than I have ever seen a player jump, and pushed his way, not once, but twice, giving the San Diego Chargers a touchdown and an eleven point lead, 17-6. Tomlinson, you are truly great. You shine above the rest. Your name will forever be known as one of the best running back players in the National Football League. And with that touchdown, not only did the Chargers feel their eminence shine over the entire flooded stadium, they felt empowered, as the Titans had less than a couple of minutes to make two scores. Vince Young threw and threw, got sacked, and finally threw an interception, solidifying his team the loss, solidifying the Chargers win, giving the San Diego Chargers the victory and a playoff spot.
Wow, what a game. What a last fourth quarter and few minutes, giving the fans a great finish. Pumped, coming off this incredible win, Rivers, Tomlinson, and the rest of the Chargers team will have a lot to think about before next week. Before facing last years Super Bowl Champions the mighty Colts. A tall feat they will face, but not an unbeatable task. They have already beaten them once this year, of course that was by dumb luck; having Manning throw six interceptions and having Vinatieri miss two easy field goals. But the basis is, that they won, they beat them, and in the end, that is all that counts. That is all anyone remembers. That is everything. So bring your best game Indianapolis Colts, the San Diego Chargers are hot and fervid, ready for action; ready for anything intricate you might throw at them.
