The most anticipated college football game this season was played this Saturday at the Cotton Bowl between the No. 1 ranked team Oklahoma Sooners, and the No. 5 ranked team Texas Longhorns. Both teams so far have been perfect this year, have not lost a game, and have two of the best quarterbacks in college football. Surprisingly, the Longhorns were the underdogs coming into this game, and with all eyes on the Heisman hopeful's Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford, both quarterbacks played phenomenal. Sam Bradford threw for five touchdowns, while Colt McCoy threw and ran for touchdowns, making both men MVP's of the game.
This Red River Rivalry between the two teams came down to offense, defense, and luck. While both teams played their best, it seemed at first this would be a low scoring game. The Sooners came out strong with a touchdown on their opening possession, while the Longhorns had to settle for a field goal, and while the Sooners seemed to dominate the first two quarters of the game, by halftime, it was 21-20, with only a one point lead for the Sooners. It was the second half where the Longhorns turned the game around, and kept getting stronger both offensively and defensively, putting greater pressure on Sam Bradford. Every time the Sooners scored a touchdown, the Longhorns came back with a touchdown to keep the game close, never allowing the score to get out of reach.
Colt McCoy led his team to an incredible victory against the No. 1 ranked team, 45-35, and after this game, there should be no doubt in anybody's mind that he should win the Heisman Trophy this year. Texas should be ranked No. 1 after this game, and although Oklahoma did lose, they still played a great game, and should only move down a few spots to No. 3. And while sophomore Bradford had one of the best games of his life, junior McCoy looked like a professional on the football field. He threw the ball with precision, ran when he had to for first downs, and did not throw one interception. He took charge of his team, like a real leader, showing that one year can make a whole lot of difference in confidence, maturity, and has emerged into an excellent quarterback.
Two other top teams slaughtered their opponents this Saturday, No. 6 ranked Penn State beat Wisconsin 48-7, having a wonderful start to the season. Penn State should after this spectacular win move up to the No. 2 spot. And while both Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford are the favorites to win the Heisman this year, there is another promising quarterback that just might slip passed them on the inside and take away the trophy. Florida's quarterback Tim Tebow led his team to a spectacular victory over No. 4 ranked LSU, 51-21. Tim Tebow seemed flawless, and after this win, the No. 11 ranked Florida should move into the No. 5 slot.
There have been a few other names mentioned for the short list of the Heisman this year, but if Colt McCoy keeps playing as he has been doing all season, he should definitely walk away with the trophy. And while these four teams have proven they are by far the best in college football this year, it seems like most of the other teams have slipped in the rankings and fallen in disappointment. Even the once great Fighting Irish, who were on a winning streak and could possibly break into the top 25, lost this week, showing that Notre Dame needs a lot more practice if they are to be considered a threat. Texas, Oklahoma, Penn State and Florida are the teams to watch this year. These four teams are destined to meet up again in either the Rose Bowl or the BCS Championship game. They are by far the best and the brightest among college football, and only seem to get better each week.
